History of Jodhpur’s Royal Palaces

Jodhpur’s royal legacy began in 1459 with Mehrangarh Fort, built by Rao Jodha as a powerful hilltop fortress.

In 1899, Jaswant Thada was constructed as a marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II.
Umaid Bhawan Palace, built between 1928–1943, provided jobs during a famine and became one of the world’s largest private residences.

1. Mehrangarh Fort: Fortress of Kings

History & Legacy

Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, Mehrangarh Fort majestically crowns a rocky ridge 400 ft above Jodhpur. Built to safeguard a new capital after fleeing Mandore, this mighty fortress has never been taken by force and was dubbed by Rudyard Kipling as “a palace built by titans” Wikipedia.

What to See Inside

Mehrangarh houses magnificent palaces such as Sheesh Mahal (Mirrored Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Jhanki Mahal, Dipak Mahal, and Takhat Vilas—each offering distinct architectural brilliance and royal stories

The Mehrangarh Museum displays rich artifacts—royal howdahs, palkis, swords, manuscripts, and more in galleries like Daulat Khana, Arms Gallery, Palanquin Gallery, and the Turban Gallery.

On-site, the Chamunda Devi Temple sits within the fort walls, bearing spiritual importance and panoramic views of the city—though it was also the scene of a tragic 2008 stampede during Navratri

2. Umaid Bhawan Palace: A Palace Born of Purpose

Historical Origins

Commissioned by Maharaja Umaid Singh in the 1930s, Umaid Bhawan Palace was built to provide employment during a prolonged drought and famine.

It took nearly 15 years (1928–1943) to complete, with over 2,000 workers employed during construction—a project described as both philanthropic and grandiose.

Highlights & Museum

Part of the palace remains the residence of the royal family, another is now a heritage hotel run by Taj, while a museum houses vintage clocks, royal memorabilia, and Maharajas’ classic cars—including a 1927 Rolls Royce.

3. Jaswant Thada: Marble Memorial of Love

History & Significance

Erected in 1899 and completed by 1906, Jaswant Thada is a white marble cenotaph built in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II by his son, Maharaja Sardar Singh.
