Exploring the Beginning Point of Our Ganga

Nestled high in Uttarakhand’s awe‑inspiring Himalayas lies Gaumukh (Gomukh)—literally, the cow’s mouth

the sacred snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the true beginning point of our Ganga River. At about 13,200 ft (4,023 m), this ethereal spot in the Uttarkashi district marks the point where the Bhagirathi River emerges—later to become the mighty, life‑giving Ganges.

Whether you’re a spiritual pilgrim, a mountain‑enthusiast, or a first‑time researcher, this post is your companion to experiencing the Ganga’s ethereal genesis. Let’s begin our trek to the very source of the sacred Ganga!

beginning point of our Ganga River

Where does the Ganga River actually start?

The Ganga River officially begins at Devprayag, where two rivers—Bhagirathi (from Gaumukh Glacier) and Alaknanda—meet. However, the true source of the Ganga is considered to be the Gaumukh Glacier, from where the Bhagirathi River originates. So, Gaumukh is seen as the spiritual and geographical beginning point of the Ganga.

How do I reach Gaumukh?

  1. Reach Gangotri: Travel from Dehradun → Uttarkashi → Gangotri (can take 1.5 to 2 days by road).

  2. Start Trek from Gangotri: Trek ~18 km via Chirbasa and Bhojbasa to reach Gaumukh.

Only 150 trekkers per day are allowed beyond Gangotri with a forest permit.

Do I need a guide or can I go solo?

While solo travel is allowed, it’s strongly recommended to hire a registered local guide or join a group trek, especially due to:

  • Altitude-related risks

  • Glacier terrain and narrow pathways (e.g., Gila Pahar landslide zone)

  • Permit and registration formalities

What permits or documents are needed?

  • Forest Permit from the Gangotri DFO Office (₹150)

  • Medical fitness certificate from a registered doctor

  • ID proof (Aadhar, Passport, etc.)

  • TIMS registration may be needed through your tour operator
