About the Sacred Prison Cell

According to Hindu scriptures, Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in a jail cell where they were imprisoned by Devaki’s evil brother, King Kamsa. A prophecy had foretold that Devaki’s 8th son would end Kamsa’s reign. In fear, he locked up the couple and killed their first six children.

But the birth of the 8th child, Krishna, was miraculous. The prison doors opened on their own, the guards fell asleep, and Vasudeva carried baby Krishna across the Yamuna River to safety in Gokul.

Today, this exact jail cell—preserved inside the temple—is known as the Garbha Griha. A stone slab marks the holy spot. Photography is not allowed inside, preserving the cell’s sacred atmosphere.
