Diwali Diaries Leh-Ladakh Road Trip Adventure – This Diwali, I embarked on a journey that combined the festive spirit of the festival of lights with the serene beauty of the Himalayas. Leh-Ladakh road trip offered a unique blend of adventure, spirituality, and cultural immersion. From the bustling streets of Delhi to the tranquil landscapes of Ladakh, every moment was a celebration of life.

Day 1: Delhi to Manali – The Journey Begins

Leaving behind the city lights, we set out from Delhi, heading towards Manali. The drive was long, but the anticipation of the journey ahead kept our spirits high. We passed through picturesque towns and winding roads, with the majestic Himalayas gradually coming into view. Manali, with its cool climate and scenic beauty, served as the perfect first stop.

 

Day 2: Manali to Sarchu – Crossing the Rohtang Pass

The next day, we crossed the Rohtang Pass, a challenging yet exhilarating experience. The snow-capped peaks and rugged terrain were a testament to nature’s raw beauty. Descending into the Lahaul Valley, we reached Sarchu, a high-altitude desert known for its camping sites and starry nights. The cold was biting, but the warmth of the bonfire and camaraderie made it bearable.

 

Day 3: Sarchu to Leh – Entering Ladakh

As we continued our journey, the landscape transformed. The barren mountains and clear blue skies of Ladakh greeted us. We passed through the Tanglang La, the second-highest motorable pass in the world, and descended into Leh. The town, with its Tibetan influence and Buddhist monasteries, felt like a different world altogether.

 

Day 4: Acclimatization in Leh

Given the high altitude, we took a day to acclimatize. Leh’s local markets, with their vibrant colors and bustling atmosphere, provided a perfect setting for relaxation. We explored the local cuisine, tried traditional dishes, and interacted with the friendly locals. The day was a blend of rest and exploration, setting the tone for the adventures to come.

 

Day 5: Leh to Nubra Valley – Through Khardung Lake

Eager to explore more, we set out for Nubra Valley, crossing the Khardung La, one of highest motorable roads in the world. journey was challenging, but the views were worth every bit of effort. Nubra Valley, with its sand dunes and Bactrian camels, was a surreal experience. We spent the night in a traditional camp, under a sky full of stars.

 

Day 6: Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake

next day, we headed towards Pangong Lake.. The route was scenic, with the changing colors of the mountains and the vast expanse of the lake. Pangong Lake, with its crystal-clear waters and surrounding mountains, was a sight to behold. We camped by the lake, experiencing the tranquility of the place.

 

Day 7: Pangong Lake to Leh – Return Journey

After a peaceful night by the lake, we began our journey back to Leh.  return trip offered a different perspective of landscapes we had traversed. We took time to reflect on the experiences and memories created during the trip.

 

Day 8: Leh to Delhi – The Final Leg

final leg of our journey took us back to Delhi. As we descended from the high altitudes, the familiar sights and sounds of the city welcomed us. road trip had come to an end, but the memories and experiences would last a lifetime.

 

Travel Tips:

Acclimatization: Spend a day in Leh to adjust to the high altitude.

Permits: Ensure you have the necessary permits for restricted areas.

Packing: Carry warm clothing, even during summer months.

Vehicle: Opt for a sturdy vehicle suitable for mountainous terrain.

Health: Stay hydrated and avoid overexertion to prevent altitude sickness

 

Local Cuisine to Try:

Thukpa: hearty noodle soup.

Momos: Steamed dumplings filled with vegetables or meat.

Skyu:  traditional Ladakhi dish made with wheat flour and vegetables.

Butter Tea: salty tea made with butter, milk, and tea leaves.
